The History Project:
Polar Wave Ice Palace Recognition
History Project Kick-Off
Over 50 persons gathered in the Crystal Room of the Brownstone Restaurant on April 20 for the Polar Wave Reception to celebrate the official kickoff of the Greater Houston Skating Council History Project. The History Project goal is to compile for publication information on area residents and events that have contributed to the world of skating. Governor George W. Bush commended the GHSC noting that the Polar Wave Ice Palace (1926-1957), was a Texas cultural and historic landmark for more than a quarter century.
CAPSTONE Asset Management Company underwrote the event and music was provided by the Royal Stewart Harp Ensemble.
History Project Committee members include Dr. Louis J. Girard; Patricia Keightley; William R. Eckhardt, III; Tommy Osborn; Chuck Rolland; David Westheimer; Robin Kent; Serita Beck; Jim Fisher; and Houston Public Television.
During the program yellow roses similar to those presented to Tara Lipinski at Bush Intercontinental were presented to Patricia Keightley and Evelyn Bennett some of the earliest figure skaters in the area.
